There is not too much to a balance, but the few parts are typically expensive.  We took apart the A&D HF-200 balance here for you to see what is in a precision lab balance.  We typically tell people if the balance is older than 3 years older and cost you under $500 when you purchased the balance then it is probably cheaper to just replace the balance verses sending the balance in for repair.
